Joel Gordon’s professional experience spans over 20 years within in the film and television industry as an award-winning actor, director, and television producer. In 1995, he founded V-Formation Productions, through which he has produced and directed socially relevant and captivating films. From exploring the history of the Rastafarian movement to capturing the life of the iconic scribe Margaret Atwood, Gordon’s performance, both on and off camera, has commanded critical acclaim.
In 2007, Gordon was nominated for a Gemini Award for his highly rated portrait of William Hutt entitled, “Leading Man: The Life and Times of William Hutt,” part of CBC’s The Life and Times series. This is his second recognition from the Academy of Canadian Film and Television, following his 2004 Gemini nominated documentary "Wrestling with Destiny: The Life and Times of Daniel Igali.” In 2005, he received 3 Leo Awards for the latter film. Joel Gordon is also the winner of the 1995 Harry Jerome Award for the Arts.
His feature film debut, "Superbob" (2001), amidst competition from Spike Lee, Eric LaSalle, and Robert Townsend, won the Star!TV ReelChoice Audience Award at the 2002 Reel World Film Festival in Toronto.
Gordon’s latest documentaries include, “Embracing Da Kink” for Global Television “Rastafari: Then and Now” for Omni Television and “Turning Pages: The Life and Literature of Margaret Atwood”, which was recently showcased on the Bravo! Television (Canada). Recently, “Embracing Da Kink” received a Golden Sheaf Award for Best Documentary – Arts and Culture and was nominated for a 2008 Gemini Award for Best Performing Arts Program.
